Can you Drive After
Sedation Dentistry?

Do you put off going to the dentist because of anxiety? Our sedation dental care in Paso Robles, CA, may be an excellent solution for you. This type of dentistry uses medication to help you relax and feel comfortable during your appointment. You can ask us any questions you have about sedation dentistry. One thing you may be wondering about is if you can drive after sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry and How Does it Work?

With sedation dentistry, we use medication to help you relax. This type of dental care is also sometimes called sleep dentistry because it can make you feel drowsy.

The sedative we use will depend on your anxiety level and the type of procedure you’re having. We may use a pill, gas, or intravenous sedation. In most cases, we will use “laughing gas,” inhaled through the nose.

While under its influence, you might be conscious but have trouble recalling many details of the appointment. You can unwind and feel comfortable throughout your appointment. You can sound inebriated or slur your words. You’ll be somewhat alert and very calm, almost as if you were in a light slumber. As a result, you won’t recall anything about your appointment later. After sedation dentistry, you might not be able to drive, but you will be able to answer questions and follow instructions. Additionally, we will observe you throughout your session to ensure your safety and comfort.

Can You Drive After Sedation Dentistry?

Though the effects of most types of sedation dentistry are easily managed and wear off quickly, you should be careful during your recovery period. You will not be able to drive after sedation dentistry. The sedative effects can last for several hours. After your sedation dentistry appointment, you will need someone to drive you home. If you try to drive and get in an accident, you could be charged with driving under the influence. It is better to be safe than sorry and take all the precautions recommended by your dentist after your procedure.

It would be best if you also took the following precautions after your appointment:

  • Refrain from consuming alcohol for 24 hours following your appointment.
  • Refrain from driving for at least 24 hours following your appointment.
  • Eat soft, light meals for the first 24 hours after your surgery.
  • Follow the directions on any prescription medication.
  • For at least 24 hours following your appointment, refrain from smoking.
  • Get some rest/relaxation at home.
